Good Morning Guys!
Happy Memorial Day! I’m at work, naturally.. But I hope you all are off and enjoying the day!
Just a quick update from the weekend. I had a surprise on Saturday as I was doing a water change on the outdoor stock tub. It seems that the added fresh water and the surface agitation from filling the tub has sparked my fish to spawn. I saw the two males Bubba and Rio chasing one of my female calicos around relentlessly as the tub was filling. I came out a few hours later in the evening and saw that a couple of the water hyacinth plants had eggs on them. I was jumping for joy! Finally!
I took the plants out and inspected the eggs which looked all to be clear except for a few. When the eggs are clear it means that they are fertilized, when they are cloudy it means that they were not fertilized.
There wasn’t many in this batch, but there were some and that’s a start. So I took the plants with the eggs still attached and placed them in a 10 gallon tank that was filled with approximately 6-8 inches of water. I added an air stone, a heater that was set to 74 degrees F and I added some methylene blue to prevent fungus from the unfertilized eggs. This was on Saturday, so according to my research the eggs (if kept at the right temp of 74 degrees F) should hatch 2-3 days, but could take up to 5-7 days. I am actually getting nervous because most of the eggs in the fry tank seem to be cloudy. I am wondering if I took them out too early and the males were not able to fertilize them. However, I am still going to give it a few more days to see if anything happens. This is my first time raising goldfish fry, so I imagine there will be a few trial and error periods during the process.
I am actually heading out of town this weekend with some of my family and my fiancé to the Adirondacks. We usually head up there twice a year for camping and I cannot wait, but I am nervous because I will not be able to care for the fry for two days so I am working on figuring that out. I don’t have anyone who can come and take care of them during that time so I have to think of something, as well as what to do for my beardies as well. I’ll keep you updated on the progress of that.
So, there are a few other things I’ve been working on and I’m excited to share them with you!
The first project is just about ready and all items will be up for sale soon! All goldfish merch will be able to be purchased through this blog. So what are the first set of items?
These babies are hand painted by yours truly! I went for a more abstract looking mug with an outlined silhouette of multiple breeds of fancy goldfish, so hopefully everyone can find their favorites 🙂
I also have one more set of merch that will be posted here when complete, but until then you’ll have to wait and see!
I am working now to make sure the integrity of the mugs are solid before I sell them to you guys. I want to make sure they withstand washing, dishwasher and normal wear and tear. Even though I am using enamel paint with an acrylic sealant spray on top, I am having trouble with chipping when washing. It may just be that these guys will have to be lightly washed in the sink or they may have to be only dishwasher safe. I don’t want to limit the audience though, so I am working diligently to try and get these guys up to standards before they are in your happy hands 🙂
So, that’s all I have for today, thanks for reading and have a great week!
